Faith in the Public SquareSundays, Sept 15 through Oct 13
11:15 am Conference Room B |
Join us for a five-week adult education series that explores questions involving faith and public life. This course will not be focused on party politics or the horse race of who is up or down in the polls. Instead, this series will explore questions of how our faith can inform our actions as we engage in public life. We will think about why communities of faith should discuss politics and what our Presbyterian heritage and Biblical prophets can teach us about the intersection of faith and public life. It will also address Christian Nationalism, a movement that is currently impacting our national political conversation.
This series will be led by Pastor Paul and Emily Marshall, Elder for Christian Formation, and it will include a few videos and time for discussion. SEPT 15 What guidelines should we follow as we discuss difficult topics? What is politics from a Biblical and theological perspective, and why should we talk about faith and politics as a community of faith? How does Diana Butler Bass, theologian and historian, answer these questions? (video) SEPT 22 What did John Calvin have to say about faith in the public square, and how have his beliefs and teachings shaped the thinking and actions of Presbyterians throughout the ages? SEPT 29 THE PROPHETIC TRADITION How did the Old Testament prophets shape this conversation? What insights do they have for us about how faith relates to the public square and how we choose our leaders? OCT 6 What is Christian Nationalism? What are its historical roots and its goals/end game? Why should we be concerned about it? How does Professor Julie Ingersoll answer these questions? (video) OCT 13 What is the Biblical and theological response to Christian Nationalism? And what do pudding cups have to do with it? (video by Skye Jethani, pastor and author) |
