Children with Special Needs

Children with special needs are a welcome part of our faith community. Sometime they will speak out or make noise during worship. This is to be expected and accepted. We have volunteer aides to assist children in Sunday School so that their parents may attend worship. Please let Rev. Martha Ross-Mockaitis know of any special accommodations we can make to enable your child to fully participate in our children's ministry program.

AWARE - Adapted Worship and Religious Education
This special class is held in a unique low-stimulus classroom at a different day and time from our general worship and Sunday School. This one-hour class has dedicated teachers throughout the year, and offers a format of free choice activities, adapted worship
with AWARE Sunday Schoola Bible story and message, giving an offering to God, singing and a fellowship time with snack. Parents, once their child has become settled in the program, go across the hall to read or talk with other parents. Each class is designed for six children and we currently serve ages 6-12 years. We would like to expand to offer a class for youth ages 13-18 years.

AWARE uses our own faith-based curriculum for children needing a separate setting to explore their faith. Children with Autism Spectrum disorders, seizure disorders, and other physical, cognitive and learning challenges are welcome to attend. Families do not need to be members of Winnetka Presbyterian Church to have their child participate in AWARE. We draw families from the surrounding communities and from a variety of Protestant faiths. Please speak with Rev. Martha Ross-Mockaitis, Director of Children Ministries, if you have any questions or want to observe a class.  [to e-mail Martha, click here]
